Most families go into the college process feeling overwhelmed because:

  • The application landscape changes every year and is hard to keep up with
  • There's too much conflicting advice — from schools, friends, and online
  • Students don't know how to tell their story in a way that stands out
  • Deadlines, testing schedules, and essays all hit at the same time

The right guidance doesn't just reduce stress — it changes outcomes.

Not a national chain. A real team who knows you.

Clear Directions is a boutique college advising practice in Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ with a team of certified counselors — many of whom spent decades as school counselors and admissions professionals before joining. Every student gets personal attention, ongoing relationships, and guidance built around their individual goals — not a one-size-fits-all process.

What we do

Comprehensive guidance through every step of the process.

From building your college list to submitting your first application — and everything in between.

College List Development

We get to know each student — their interests, goals, grades, and personality — and build a personalized, balanced list of schools that fit academically, socially, and financially.

Course & Activity Planning

We advise on high school coursework, summer programs, internships, and extracurriculars that strengthen both the application and the student's self-knowledge.

Activities Resume

A strong activities resume highlights accomplishments, leadership, community service, and interests — used for applications, recommendation requests, and campus interviews.

Essay Writing & Coaching

Our writing specialist, Caroline, helps students find their authentic voice and craft compelling essays that reveal character — while keeping the student's voice genuinely theirs.

College Visits

We help families make the most of college visits — what to look for, questions to ask, and how to evaluate fit. A post-visit debrief helps refine the list.

Testing Strategy

ACT or SAT? How many times? When? We help students build the most beneficial testing schedule and connect them with the right prep resources.

Application Preparation

Step-by-step guidance through the entire application process — deadlines, early decision vs. early action strategy, Common App, and everything in between.

Letters of Recommendation

We advise students on how to select and approach teachers for the strongest possible letters — and guide the process when additional letters are appropriate.

Final Decision Support

When acceptance letters arrive, we help families compare offers, decipher financial aid letters, and make the right call — including waitlist and deferral strategies.

Interview Preparation

When interviews are required, we spend dedicated time on mock interviews — building the confidence and communication skills that make a lasting impression.

Transfer Student Advising

Already in college and considering a transfer? We guide current college students through the transfer application process with the same personalized approach.

Athletic Recruitment Advising

For student-athletes being recruited at the Division I, II, or III level, Joanne provides specialized guidance on timelines, coach communication, and the intersection of athletics and admissions.

Is this right for you?

This is for your family if…

Great fit

  • Your student is a high school sophomore, junior, or senior
  • You want a personalized approach — not a one-size-fits-all process
  • You want to reduce stress and stay organized
  • You want your student to find the right fit — not just get in somewhere
  • You're a current college student considering a transfer

Not a fit

  • You want a guaranteed admission to a specific school
  • You want someone to write your student's essays for them
  • Your student is not willing to put in the work
  • You're looking for the cheapest option available
Common questions

You probably have questions.

When should we start working with a college counselor?
The earlier the better — we work with students as early as sophomore year. That said, we also work with juniors and seniors and can make a meaningful difference at any stage.
What is the Meet & Greet?
A free 30-minute session for our team to describe our approach, outline the advising process and timeline, and answer any questions from students and parents. Our goal is to make sure everyone feels comfortable before we begin working together.
Do you work with students virtually or in person?
Both. All of our counselors are available to meet virtually. We also have an office in Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ for in-person sessions — whatever works best for your family.
Can you guarantee admission to a specific school?
No — and anyone who claims they can should be approached with caution. What we do is give your student the strongest possible application and the best-matched college list, which maximizes their chances at the schools that truly fit them.
Do you help with financial aid and scholarships?
We help families understand and compare financial aid award letters, and we factor financial fit into the college list process.
What makes Clear Directions different?
Our team brings genuine school counseling and admissions experience. Claire founded Clear Directions after nearly 20 years at Ridgewood High School because she saw how much students benefit from the personal attention an independent counselor can provide. Every student gets a real relationship, not a checklist.
Do you work with students with learning differences?
Yes. All of our counselors are knowledgeable about colleges that offer strong academic support programs, and we guide students toward schools where they'll have the accommodations they need to succeed.
